This cardigan was my first attempt at lace knitting and is my favorite cardigan!
I tend towards a "go big or go home" attitude when it comes to trying new things, so I decided to try lace knitting on a big project rather than something small, like a sample square or a scarf. (I do not recommend this style of learning, but bad habits die hard!)
I found this pattern on the Knitty website (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEss10/PATTquesera.php). It's called "Que Sera", like the Doris Day song, and it's cute as can be.
I made this cardigan in the spring of 2010 using Loops and Threads Snuggly-Wuggly yarn, which pills a little bit but not enough to ruin the look of the lace pattern. I'll go for a silkier yarn the next time I make this cardigan.
My least favorite part of any project is finishing, so I really like that the body pieces of this project are knit in one piece. The downside to making one big body piece is that it takes forever, especially when knitting in a lace pattern.
The upside to knitting one big body piece is that the sleeves seem to take no time at all!
I discovered that the sleeves are just a hair shorter than I'd like (they're not quite three-quarter-length, so my wrists are exposed. On the plus side I can wear lots of bracelets!), so the next time I make this pattern I'll add another segment of the lace pattern.
My plan was to find fun vintage buttons at an antique store, so I bought plastic buttons as placeholders so I could wear the caridgan right away. I liked the weight and look of the plastic buttons so much that I kept them and stopped looking for vintage metal. Don't worry, material purists, I promise to find vintage buttons for the next time I make this cardi!
